The theme of the 10th Annual YMCA Prayer Breakfast was Miracles -- and God showed up delivering a few to our planning committee!
The first miracle that appeared happened the day before the breakfast...
We had been promised free centerpieces this year, but a week before the prayer breakfast we were told the offer was lost. We didn’t have anything. But God put a call into the heart of someone who works at Walmart. The day before the prayer breakfast, Walmart donated 200 footballs to the Valley of the Sun YMCA! When Harold Shea , our Chandler/Gilbert YMCA branch Executive Director, received an email from the Valley of the Sun main office offering a few footballs for each YMCA branch in the valley, he jumped on it! Harold asked if we could take all of the footballs for the prayer breakfast to use as centerpieces, use them as gifts to anyone who makes a donation of $50 or more to the Y, and return the rest.
Since retired Cardinal player Tyronne Stowe was scheduled to be our keynote this year and several Arizona Rattlers football players would be attending, they’d be on hand to sign the footballs for any contributors. The Valley of the Sun YMCA office responded a resounding, “YES!”
The footballs added fun to our event AND resulted in over $3,000 in donations for YMCA program scholarships!
The second miracle happened to Pastor Victor Hardy of our Prayer Breakfast planning committee.
His birthday was on September 15th and I was going to announce his birthday during my speech at the podium… but I forgot! God didn’t forget Victor’s birthday, though. After the prayer breakfast was over, Pastor Victor Hardy went to the parking lot. A truck pulled up in front of him and the driver asked if anyone wanted a brand new 36-inch TV. Pastor Victor Hardy’s TV in his living room had broken a couple of months ago and he couldn’t afford to replace it. After Pastor Hardy received the TV, he went back inside the YMCA gym and smiled telling me that “God was tired of hearing me moan about my broken TV and just gave me one!”
When I realized later that night that I forgot to wish Pastor Victor Hardy a happy birthday… my heart burst with joy when I realized that God remembered and took care of it for me – by delivering a free big screen TV to him on his birthday!
The next miracle is not totally complete, but was started at the prayer breakfast. Harold Shea had announced that we had free Cardinals tickets for that Sunday’s game and that we would be drawing the winners after the breakfast.
I know John Power was sitting by God and asking Him to pick his daughter’s name. She attended that day with her mom and brother to hear me honor her dad, John Power, from the podium.
Sure enough! Camille Power Miller’s name was drawn for the free tickets! Unfortunately, Harold emailed her twice and didn’t hear back in time to give her the tickets. (I am hoping someone from the Cardinals could offer her new tickets for a future game because it truly was a miracle that her name was chosen randomly from the pile of YMCA donors that morning.)
Another miracle happened after I announced next year’s 11th Annual YMCA Prayer Breakfast theme would be Inspire.
Darleen Santore, our emcee, got goosebumps when she heard the announcement! She had already been planning to do a new series called – what else? – “Inspiration Nights!” She asked if I would help her plan them and speak with her on the stage! This is a dream come true for me! Darleen coached me a year ago to write my stories down, and that was what inspired me to create AnchorMoments.com!
Here is a one minute video of Coach Dar – Darleen Santore – that she was inspired to create after emceeing our YMCA Prayer Breakfast:
Let me end with one more miracle…
YMCA Board Director Leann Priddy told Lin Sue Cooney , the longtime news anchor for Channel 12, about our wonderful event and next year’s theme. Lin Sue Cooney is available and eager to be our keynote speaker next year! This is the first time in eleven years that we have had a keynote booked a year in advance! Additionally, Darleen Santore committed to be our emcee again, and St. Mary’s Media Ministry is ready to help us with our staging and sound!
So save the date, Wednesday, September 20th. for the 11th Annual YMCA Prayer Breakfast: Inspire!
If you have a miracle to share, big or small, please write about it in the comment section below. I would love to hear them!
