Last week, my friends and I were invited to go to a movie about human sex trafficking of minors at a special evening event at the Phoenix Zoo. Proceeds from that event would help one of my favorite non-profits, StreetlightUSA. I heard that Senator John McCain’s wife, Cindy McCain, would be there.
I wanted to attend with my friends who have been working with me to put on another event, Gala Night for StreetlightUSA. I also wanted to be there because it would be an honor to meet Cindy McCain. I admire her dedication to working on this issue for so many years.
But, alas, I couldn’t go because it was on the same night and time as a computer class I am taking at Chandler/Gilbert Community College. I was so disappointed. During class that night, as I was studying Microsoft Office applications, my friends were posting fun pictures of themselves at the zoo with Cindy McCain. I wished I could be there, too.
God could see into my heart, and He had a special surprise for me a few days later.
The surprise started with an invitation the following day, to go to a special lunch with Senator John McCain as the guest speaker at the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. The lunch was only $10! I quickly signed up and the lunch was the following Monday.
My husband Jeff and I, along with my Chandler Chamber friends, enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by Modern Margarita in the conference room at the Chamber. Senator McCain came as promised, and as a special surprise, his wife Cindy joined him!
During the question/answer period of the luncheon, another person on my Gala Night planning team for StreetlightUSA, Joyce, asked Senator McCain a question about the problem of sex trafficking and rape culture. Senator McCain graciously gave the microphone to his wife, Cindy, to answer the question and share her ideas. Cindy spoke about educating children about respecting each other and a curriculum that is being developed with regard to respect as a prevention tool for sex trafficking. After Cindy spoke, Joyce thanked her and invited her and Senator McCain to our Gala Night for StreetlightUSA . They said they would be honored to come!
After the lunch was over, Senator McCain and his wife stayed for pictures. While I got my picture taken with them, I asked Cindy McCain if she heard of Alexis La Benz, a founding member of GS GEMS. She smiled and said, “Yes I do.”
I grinned and proudly told her, “I am Alexis’ Mom!”
As I look back on this day, my heart smiles. God truly knows how to surprise me! It was such a special blessing to meet Cindy McCain... especially after being disappointed that I missed her the previous week because I was in class. It made me feel God’s presence and encouragement that I am on the right path. I look forward to see where He will lead me next.
